the event of the year in Kigali social scene took place on thursday. This event really was the place to be seen at. It was the Mustache Caucus 2008.
On one side there was Alasdair - ambassador of all things scottish and legal intern with IJM. On the other side was Sam - ambassador of all things texan and working at FHI. A last minute candidate was included standing as an independent, called Chris. The judging Electoral Commission was composed of Marissa and myself with suffrage including all those present at La Fiesta on thursday night. Respect was given to Dieter (Director of IJM in Rwanda) as an honorary mustache wearer with many years of experience in mustache growing. His insight greatly enriched the evening.
After hustings where candidates were free to pitch their respective mustaches, voting took place on the basis of several categories. Favourites included 'most likely to get food caught', 'most curvaceous' and 'most likely to turn heads on a Kigali street'. After a not so tightly fought competition, Sam was pronounced as winner with Chris a close second and the other original contender, Alasdair, well behind in last place. However, he will have a chance to redeem himself in the second 'freestyle' phase of the competition.
Participants noted the appropriateness of holding the judging of this inaugural mustache growing competition at a Mexican restaurant.
After recovering from this awesome event, my week has been good. We celebrated Palm Sunday this morning in church including banana leaves and palm branches. Praise God, it was a really joyful atmosphere. Lots of exciting events are planned for next easter weekend so watch out for (hopefully a slightly less bizarre) entry next week.
God bless x
