what i've learnt so far about Rwanda...

I have literally not been able to stop talking about my new home so maybe sharing some of it on here will prevent me from boring friends any longer...

My job will be in the budget department of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (link on the right). Aparently, I'm taking over from an existing fellow who is returning to the UK so it should been a relatively smooth transition into the job.

Rwanda seems like a really lovely country - a friend at church this evening who has visited it said it looks like Scotland! I will be at home. Although the weather is a lot more pleasant, but rarely above 30 degrees, so liveable. From what I've read, there are relatively low crime rates and it seems like the 12 years since the Genocide have been mostly positive in terms of growth, good governance and national unity. Tourism hasn't taken off in a big way yet (but it will once you all come to visit me) thus the crime that often comes with that has not developed yet.

Main languages are Kinyarwanda - spoken by Hutus, Tutsis & Twa; English and French. I'm quite excited about this actually because it looks like the working language in the government is english, but french is very widely spoken. I get the best of both worlds, I can perfect my french but still be able to communicate & work effectively in english!!

I am just so excited, and the more I read about it, the more I just want to forget about dissertation and just get ready for Rwanda. It is beginning to really dawn on me that in possibly just over 2 months, I will be saying goodbye to everybody - time is precious.

I've also been finding out about churches and other Christians in Kigali. A couple of people at church have been there on Lawyers Christian Fellowship mission trips. Through that, i'll hopefully get the contacts of good churches and other members of the church family who I will be able to meet!

Please leave comments if you've found out anything else interesting about my new home...
